The Tesla Model Y is the vehicle that made EVs normal in Canada. The Model S was too expensive. The Model 3 was too small for most families. The Model Y is the one that convinced SUV buyers to go electric, and it has been the best-selling EV in the country for three years running.
But Tesla's build quality varies by year, by factory, and sometimes by which shift assembled the car. The heat pump that makes the Model Y efficient in Canadian winters had a bad first year. The early Fremont-built cars had panel gaps you could lose a coffee cup in. And battery health comes down to how the previous owner charged it, not the model year alone.
At Planet Motors, every Model Y we list gets the same AVILOO diagnostic as our other EVs. Year-by-year, this is what we see.
2020: The gamble year
The Model Y launched in March 2020 at Tesla's Fremont factory during the early days of the pandemic. These are the worst-built Model Ys. Panel gaps, misaligned trim, paint defects, wind noise, and occasionally a rear hatch that did not close properly without slamming it. None of these are mechanical failures, the car will drive fine, but they are constant reminders that you bought an early-build car.
Battery health on 2020 Model Ys varies more than any other year. We have seen everything from 88% to 97% state of health. The cars with low degradation were charged at home. The cars with high degradation were supercharged. A 2020 Model Y with an AVILOO score below 88% has lost 12%+ of its range.
Verdict: Only buy a 2020 Model Y if the AVILOO score is above 90% and you can live with the build quality quirks. The price should reflect the risk.
2021: The year of the heat pump sensor
The 2021 Model Y brought meaningful improvements: matte black center console, double-pane front glass, heated steering wheel (mid-year), and a revised heat pump. Then Canadian winter hit, and the heat pump sensors started failing below -20C. Tesla pushed a software update in early 2022 that adjusted the sensor thresholds, and it mostly solved the problem. Some 2021 owners had their heat pumps replaced under warranty before the fix.
If you are looking at a 2021 Model Y, check the service history for heat pump work. A replaced heat pump is not a red flag. It means the problem was fixed. Battery health on 2021 Model Ys is strong. Most units show 90–95% state of health.
Verdict: A solid car with one known issue. Check the heat pump service history. If replaced under warranty, buy with confidence. Test the heat thoroughly during the test drive.
2022: Fremont got its act together
The 2022 Model Y is the first year where build quality stopped being a conversation topic. Ryzen MCU became standard. The touchscreen finally feels modern. The lithium-ion 12V battery replaced the lead-acid unit and should last the life of the car instead of dying every 3–4 years.
Battery health: 93–98% state of health. These cars are still young, and most are still under the basic vehicle warranty (4 years / 80,000 km).
Verdict: The best pre-refresh Model Y to buy. Ryzen MCU, lithium 12V, sorted heat pump, remaining warranty. $45,000–55,000 for a Long Range with 30,000–60,000 km.
2023–2024: The comfort upgrades
The 2023 Model Y got a revised suspension with softer spring rates. The difference is noticeable. Pre-2023 cars ride firmly. The 2023+ cars are actually comfortable. Tesla also added acoustic glass to the rear windows, making the cabin quieter. The 2024 Model Y "Juniper" refresh brought styling and feature updates similar to the Model 3 Highland. Used 2024s are rare and priced near MSRP.
Verdict: 2023 brought real comfort improvements. Both are expensive used: about $50,000–62,000 for a Long Range.
Model Y vs Model 3: which is better for Canada?
The Model Y costs about $5,000–8,000 more than an equivalent-year Model 3 in the used market. What you get: more headroom, more cargo space (hatchback), higher seating position, optional 7-passenger seating (2021+), and more ground clearance (~170 mm vs ~145 mm). What you give up: about 30–40 km of range, slightly worse handling, higher price. The Model Y is the practical family choice. The Model 3 is the better value and driver's car.
The short list
- Best cheap Model Y: 2021 Long Range with verified heat pump service. $38,000–45,000.
- Best value overall: 2022 Long Range. Ryzen MCU, good build quality, remaining warranty. $45,000–52,000.
- Best Model Y period: 2023 Long Range. Comfort suspension, acoustic glass. $50,000–58,000.
- Do not buy: 2020 with no AVILOO report. 2021 with original heat pump and no cold-weather test drive.
